Background

The EU complements national health policies by encouraging local authorities in the EU to achieve common goals, pool resources and also tackle common problems together. It drafts European legislation and standards for products and services and also provides funding for health projects across the EU.

EU public health policy aims to protect and improve health, equal access to modern and efficient healthcare for all Europeans and coordination in the event of serious health threats affecting several EU countries. Disease prevention and response play a major role in this. Prevention covers many areas, such as vaccination, the fight against antibiotic resistance, anti-cancer measures and good food labelling.

Two agencies support national governments on health issues. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control analyzes emerging threats and coordinates the response. The European Medicines Agency manages the scientific evaluation of the quality, safety and effectiveness of all medicines in the EU.
